Manually update your Nexus One and Nexus S to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

As we mentioned just the other day the OTA is going out now and if you rather be patient and wait you will recieve the update that way.  I have just done the manual update for my Nexus One and everything worked smoothly. Swype users: note you will need to redownload/update swype as usual with an OS update.

Directions for Nexus One

  • Download the update here. [XDA]
  • Rename the file to update.zip For Windows; just "update" as it is already a zip file.
  • Copy the update.zip file to your microSD card.
  • With your Nexus One off, hold down the trackball and press power.
  • You'll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select "Bootloader."
  • On the next screen, select "Recovery."
  • Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.
  • Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time.
  • Now (using the trackball this time) choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" and you're all set. The update will run from there.
Directions for Nexus S

  • Download the OTA package here [XDA]
  • Rename it to update.zip.  For Wiindows; just "update" as it is already a zip file.
  • Copy the file to the internal storage on your Nexus S.
  • Power off, then hold volume up and power to reboot to the bootloader.
  • Using the volume key to navigate, select recovery, then use the power button to confirm
  • When you see the warning triangle and arrow, hold the power button and tap volume up.  You'll see a menu.
  • From the menu, select "apply update from /sdcard", and choose update.zip from the list.
  • Let it do its thing and update your system, radio, and other partitions.  When finished, choose "reboot system now"

  1. I don't have one, I'm definitely waiting for the Sidekick 4G! Can't wait! Hopefully it will be able to upgrade to 2.3 as well!
